Vale Do Lobo Royal

 

The Royal Golf Course at Vale do Lobo was designed by top American golf architect Rocky Roquemore, based on original drawings made by Sir Henry Cotton.

 

Inaugurated in 1997 the Royal Course has rolling fairways set amidst pine trees and beautiful lakes surrounded by wild flowers. Features of the course include the almost island green of the 9th where lack of accuracy could see you fishing in the water and the famous 16th, with cliff-top carryover . This is one of the most celebrated golfing images in the world, which has become a universal symbol of golf in the Algarve.

 

Improvements were made to the course at the end of 2003. The 2nd and 14th greens were enlarged and bunkers were added to make these holes more interesting. A new lake was also created at the 14th hole improving the visual look of the hole and the irrigation of the course.

 

The par 3 9^th plays to an almost island green and careful selection of the right club is vital. The par 5 11^th is a great test. Start with a good drive because you will need a good second shot to land accurately between a steep bank and a lake for a comfortable approach to the green. The famous original par 3 7^th is now the 16^th. This beautiful hole plays across a red sandstone slash in the cliff and there is nothing you can do if you lose your ball! The views from this hole and along the coastline to the west are spectacular.

 

Watch out for the 18th with its narrow fairway, lined with pines and a tricky green. You will need to be confident with your shot to the green and make sure it lands firmly.
