Alongside 18,300 hectares of Ria Formosa National Park, providing a habitat for several species of birds and has much interesting vegetation, Pinheiros Altos was designed by American Ronald Fream. The course was later redeveloped by Peter McEvoy and Howard Swan.
The additional holes are perfectly in keeping with the former eighteen. For those who have played the course before, Jorge will be remembered for his distinctive redesign of the original 18th green in front of the clubhouse. Now he has created a fluid 27 hole layout.
The first three holes of the original nine remain unaltered. Six consecutive new holes have been incorporated and the whole aptly name 'The Pines'.
The previous back nine, now 'The Olives', remain enitrely unchanged, dropping down to the valley bottom where intrusive lakes provide a test of accuracy. The par 5, 3rd on The Olives has all the ingredients of a great golf hole. The tee shot must be determined and accurate. A draw here would be ideal, for a lake on the left and bunkers extending down the right favour such a shot. That's not to say the tall lakeside eucalyptus doesn't influence the drive. Thereafter this 450 metre hole continues to demand concentration, since bunkers and lakes also influenece the second shot. The approach to a tricky green rewards the bold player. Hesitate here and you are certain to find one of the numerous hazards that lie in wait.
The signature island green of the 124 metre par 3, 8th is retained and continues to provide an intimidating perspective, with water all around and with the wind liable to push your tee shot away from the target. The new nine, 'The Cork Oaks' lie somewhat to the east and belnd happily inot the overall design. These incorporate three holes from the original front nine, together with six new holes.
